What is the lifetime of the wall bed mechanism?

Multimo wall bed mechanisms have a minimum lifespan of 10 years. Gas springs may require replacement every 7 years depending on usage.

Can the bed open or close by itself?

No. The gas spring mechanism requires manual force. The bed cannot open or close by itself.
